Hit the Road with JAX and SOAR

The Southern Outdoor Access Route (SOAR) is a seasonal pilot service operated by JAX Mass Transit, designed to connect Carbondale residents and visitors to Southern Illinois’ premier outdoor destinations. Running every Saturday from July through September, SOAR offers free, reliable transportation to trailheads, beaches, and scenic spots including Cedar Lake, Giant City State Park, Touch of Nature, and the Makanda Boardwalk. With one morning departure and one afternoon return, the route makes it easy for individuals and families to enjoy hiking, biking, swimming, or simply exploring nature — all without needing a personal vehicle. SOAR promotes wellness, equity, and local tourism by making the outdoors accessible to all.

The Southern Outdoor Access Route (SOAR) isn’t just a bus route — it’s a mission to connect people with the breathtaking natural beauty of Southern Illinois. SOAR was created to eliminate transportation barriers and make outdoor recreation more accessible, particularly for those without personal vehicles.

This seasonal pilot service operates June through September and was developed in response to a need identified by a subcommittee of the Jackson County Board. Community engagement through a comprehensive transportation study further confirmed the demand for improved access to trails, lakes, and outdoor destinations.

SOAR is about wellness, equity, and adventure — providing safe, reliable, and in the case of SOAR, free transportation to some of the region’s most treasured natural spaces.
