JAX’s Step-by-Step Guide to Public Transportation Etiquette
Behaving well on public transportation can be fun and rewarding! Here’s how to be a courteous and considerate passenger.
Step 1: Boarding the Bus
Ready to Board: Form an orderly line and wait your turn to board. We won’t leave you behind.
Friendly Greetings: The JAX professional driver will welcome you aboard. Respond with a friendly nod or a cheerful “hello!”
Step 2: Find Your Seat
Preserve Priority Seating: JAX offers ample seating for able passengers, but we ask all our riders to preserve the priority seats near the front for seniors, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.
Window or Aisle: Choose your seat wisely – the window seat offers vistas of Jackson County, Illinois, while the aisle seat lets you keep an eye on the action inside.
Step 3: Onboard Etiquette
Phone Conversations: Keep phone conversations brief and quiet to respect other passengers.
Music Volume: If you would like to enjoy some music, use headphones with the volume low.
Personal Belongings: Keep belongings close and avoid occupying extra seats, so each passenger can find their place.
Avoid Disruptions: For the safety of all passengers and the focus of our drivers, please keep conversations at a reasonable volume and avoid creating disruptions.
Politeness Rules: Manners and courtesy go a long way to ensuring a pleasant journey. Say “excuse me” when you need to pass someone, and “thank you” if they let you by.
Kind Gestures: Offer your seat to those who might need it more. If occupying a priority seat, please offer it to any pregnant women, seniors, or people with disabilities who board.
Step 4: Keeping the Bus Clean
Snacks and Beverages: If eating, please choose tidy, odorless snacks so as to not disturb other passengers.
Dispose Waste Properly: Hold onto your trash until you find a bin. We ask our passengers to keep the bus clean for all those who share the space.
Step 5: Safety First
Use Safety Equipment: If standing, hold onto the poles or handrails to maintain balance while the bus is in motion. If in a seat with a seat belt, be sure to fasten the seat belt when you sit down.
Be Aware: Keep your belongings secure and stay alert to your surroundings.
Step 6: Disembarking
Prepare Early: Gather your belongings and move towards the exit before your stop.
Thank the Driver: If you have the chance, thank your driver. Let us know if you enjoyed your trip.
